Season of the Witch (1972)
The American drama film Season of the Witch (1972), written and directed by George A. Romero, follows the story of Joan Mitchell, a dissatisfied 39-year-old housewife living in suburban Pittsburgh with her husband Jack and college student daughter Nikki. Despite being attractive, Joan is unhappy with her role as a homemaker while Jack is successful but often absent on business trips and displays domineering and occasionally violent behavior. To cope with her recurring dreams about her controlling husband, Joan seeks help from a psychotherapist. As Jack continues to make comments about needing to assert his dominance, he eventually becomes physically violent towards Joan. In the midst of this turmoil, Joan and her friends become curious about their new neighbor Marion Hamilton who is rumored to practice witchcraft. F
illed with curiosity, Joan and her friend Shirley make their way to Marion’s house one evening for a Tarot reading. They soon discover that Marion is the head of a covert coven of witches in their town. On their way back to Joan’s place, they run into Gregg, a student teacher at Nikki’s college. The four spend the evening drinking and chatting. Although Joan catches Gregg taking an interest in her, she turns him down. However, things take a turn for the worse when Gregg plays a cruel trick on Shirley by making her believe she smoked marijuana. Upset, Joan kicks out Gregg from her home and takes Shirley back to her own place before returning to find Nikki and Gregg engaged in intimate activities.
