Secret in Their Eyes (2015)
Billy Ray’s Secret in Their Eyes (2015) is a thriller film that serves as a remake of the 2009 Argentine film of the same name, which was based on Eduardo Sacheri’s novel La pregunta de sus ojos. Following the events of September 11th, FBI counterterrorism agent Ray Kasten and his friend Jess Cobb, an investigator for the Los Angeles district attorney’s office, cross paths with new ADA Claire Sloan. The two are called to investigate an unidentified female body found near a mosque that could potentially have ties to terrorism. Sadly, they discover that the victim is Jess’ daughter Carolyn, who had been brutally killed and bleached to destroy any evidence. As Ray and Jess struggle with their guilt and grief over Carolyn’s death, they also feel a growing urge to leave the city behind.
While helping Jess pack, Ray notices photos from a picnic for law enforcement where a young man is looking at Carolyn. After scanning the picture, Ray identifies the man as Anzor Marzin, an informant in the terrorism probe. However, DA Martin Morales is hesitant to pursue Marzin due to concerns about compromising the investigation. Officer Reggie Siefert brings in a suspect named Aban Ghazala, but Ray realizes he is not responsible for the crime. Confronting Siefert, Ray discovers that Ghazala was set up as a scapegoat to protect Marzin. Determined to bring justice, Ray and Detective Bumpy Willis apprehend Marzin at Dodger Stadium. Meanwhile, Claire and Ray argue about his tactics while provoking Marzin into confessing and attacking her. As a result of their confrontation, Morales orders Marzin’s release despite Ray’s actions against him.
