Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five (2008) is an American animated short produced by DreamWorks. The film follows Po the Dragon Warrior as he shares the stories of his comrades in arms, the Furious Five, through a mix of computer and 2D animation. At Master Shifu’s request, Po attempts to teach a group of energetic bunny children about Kung Fu beyond just combat, emphasizing its true purpose of personal growth and achievement. Through their individual backstories and key philosophical principles, Po shows how each member of the Furious Five became a skilled Kung Fu master.
Mantis. In his youth, Mantis was a warrior who struggled with impatience and often made rash decisions without fully thinking them through. These tendencies eventually led to his capture by a group of Crocodile bandits. During his time as a prisoner, Mantis learned the value of patience and was able to use this newfound skill to deceive his captors and successfully ambush them.
Viper. Viper, the daughter of renowned warrior Great Master Viper, was known for her lack of venomous fangs. As her father relied on his lethal bite to defend their village, he doubted her ability to follow in his footsteps. This caused Viper to grow up reserved and unsure of herself. However, during a festive celebration one night, Great Master Viper found himself facing a powerful gorilla bandit wearing impenetrable snake-proof armor. In the face of danger, Viper discovered her own bravery and used her graceful ribbon dancing techniques to defeat the foe and save her father.
Crane. As the modest janitor at a Kung Fu academy, Crane never imagined himself as a student until Mei Ling convinced him to apply. Despite his long-held belief that being skinny would hinder his skills, Crane’s nerves got the best of him during tryouts. Yet, it was in a moment of stumbling into the challenging eligibility course that he found the courage to embrace his frame and excel.
Tigress. Tigress was an orphan, unfairly labeled a ‘monster’ due to her inability to control her fierce power. Upon the suggestion of the orphanage staff, Master Shifu came to instruct her in the discipline necessary for mastering her abilities. As a result, she gained the trust and friendship of her peers. However, with no one willing to adopt her, Master Shifu took on the role of both teacher and foster parent.
Monkey. In his youth, Monkey experienced humiliation which led him to seek revenge by playing pranks on the villagers. Despite numerous challengers trying to force him out, Monkey resorted to removing their pants in order to embarrass them. However, during a fight with Master Oogway, who had a shell instead of pants, Monkey was subdued and saved from potential harm. Seeing how much Monkey craved care and compassion, Oogway allowed him to remain in the village as long as he showed others the same kindness he desired for himself.
