Senior Year (2022) is an American comedy film directed by Alex Hardcastle, featuring a screenplay by Andrew Knauer, Arthur Pielli, and Brandon Scott Jones. In 1999, an eventful birthday celebration at the local “cool” hotspot, Rock N Bowl, leads 14-year-old Stephanie Conway to strive for popularity. Through a self-made transformation and involvement in various school activities such as cheerleading and dating her high school’s heartthrob Blaine, she becomes known as one of the most popular girls during her senior year. With dreams of following in the footsteps of alumna Deanna Russo, Stephanie sets out to win the coveted title of prom queen. Despite facing opposition from Blaine’s ex-girlfriend Tiffany, who feels threatened by Stephanie’s rise in popularity, she remains determined to achieve her goal. However, at a crucial cheer performance leading up to prom night, Tiffany and her friends sabotage Stephanie’s landing, causing her serious injury and leaving her in a coma. Two decades later, in 2022, the now 37-year-old Stephanie awakens from her coma under the care of her father and longtime friend Martha (now principal and cheerleading coach at Harding High).
On the drive, Stephanie passes Deanna Russo’s former residence and notices that it is now occupied by Tiffany and Blaine, who have tied the knot. With hesitant encouragement from her dad and Martha, Stephanie returns to her senior year of high school. There, she discovers that Seth is now the librarian and the titles of prom king and queen have been eliminated following complaints from students. Furthermore, Tiffany and Blaine’s daughter Bri is deemed the most well-liked student with a large social media presence. The cheerleaders are no longer revered and must perform watered-down routines without any dancing. Determined to regain her former status, Stephanie turns to social media for help. She finally achieves success after staging a provocative cheer routine that becomes a sensation at a pep rally despite not having Martha’s approval. The next day, Martha expresses feeling abandoned by Stephanie when she became popular in high school during their brief reunion. In an attempt to reconnect with him, Stephanie goes to see Deep Impact with Seth and their bond grows stronger after they provoke Tiffany into getting kicked out of the theater for causing a disruption.
