The documentary film, Senna (2010), directed by Asif Kapadia, tells the story of Brazilian motor-racing legend Ayrton Senna. The film begins with his introduction to Formula One in 1984 and his time with Toleman and Lotus before focusing on his successful partnership with McLaren that propelled him to worldwide recognition as a World Champion. This period of his career was marked by intense competition with teammate Alain Prost and political struggles with FISA leader Jean-Marie Balestre. The climax of their rivalry occurred during the controversial clashes in the 1989 and 1990 seasons that ultimately determined the drivers’ world championship title, awarded to Prost in 1989 and Senna in 1990.

The film chronicles the complex and tumultuous years of Ayrton Senna as a world champion, his push for safer practices in his sport, and his reactions to witnessing accidents including the death of fellow-driver Roland Ratzenberger. From Senna’s perspective, we also witness the rise of Williams’ dominant technological advancements, with teammate Alain Prost joining them, leading to a fallout between the two. Eventually, Prost retires while Senna takes up a spot on Williams in 1994. This coincides with changes in Formula One rules that ban computerization and result in fatal consequences for the Williams cars.
