September (1987), a drama film written and directed by Woody Allen, takes inspiration from Anton Chekhov’s 1899 play Uncle Vanya. However, the gender roles in the film are often challenged. Following a suicide attempt, Lane retreats to her country house in Vermont to recover. To accompany her for the summer, Lane’s best friend Stephanie joins her, seeking a break from her husband. Along with them comes Lane’s bold and tactless mother, Diane, and Diane’s husband Lloyd, who is also a physicist and Lane’s stepfather. Lane finds solace in her two neighbors: Peter, an aspiring writer, and Howard, a French teacher. Howard has feelings for Lane while she is attracted to Peter who in turn is interested in Stephanie. Despite Lane’s reluctance to bring up the past, Diane- once a famous actress- wants Peter to write her biography as it involves a teenage Lane shooting her mother’s abusive lover many years ago.

Although this could potentially make for an intriguing tale according to Peter, Lane does not want to revisit that painful incident. Diane’s impromptu party disrupts Lane’s evening plans with Peter. However, Peter arrives ahead of schedule and opens up to Stephanie about his long-held desire to spend alone time with her. As an electrical storm rages outside, the power cuts out, prompting the use of candles and soft piano music to set a romantic atmosphere. Later on, Diane digs up her old Ouija board and communicates with the spirits of her past relationships. Meanwhile, a highly intoxicated Howard finally admits his feelings for Lane, who unfortunately doesn’t reciprocate them. In a sober moment, Peter kindly informs Lane that he doesn’t share her romantic feelings towards him. Despite the rejection, Lane seems to handle it gracefully.
