Seraphim Falls (2006)
Seraphim Falls (2006) is an unconventional Western movie helmed by David Von Ancken, known for his work in television. The film is set in 1868, deep within the Ruby Mountains, where Gideon enjoys a meal of roasted hare over a crackling fire. Suddenly, he is ambushed and hit in the left arm. Grabbing what he can, he makes a frantic descent down the mountain. Meanwhile, Colonel Morsman Carver and his team consisting of Pope, Hayes, Parsons and the Kid emerge to investigate his abandoned campsite. Carver has hired them to track down Gideon. Determined to survive, Gideon removes the bullet from his arm with a Bowie knife while hiding from Carver’s men. In a clever attempt to distract them, he sets fire to his camp and proceeds to take out one of the attackers using only his trusty knife. Despite managing to evade capture once again, Gideon faces more challenges as he continues on his journey.
While attempting to steal a horse for transportation, he is caught by Charlotte – a young woman who ultimately ends up aiding him after discovering his injury. As the group approaches Gideon’s trail, he surprises them with a bear trap that injures one of the men. Carver then shows mercy by shooting and killing him. Later, Parsons stumbles upon a dead bank robber whom Gideon had defended himself against earlier. Since the bounty for this man is more than what Carver is offering to capture Gideon, Parsons decides to leave the others and take the body to Carson City for the reward. However, as Parsons is preparing to load the body onto a horse, Carver abruptly shoots it claiming that it belongs to him. This leaves Parsons with no choice but to walk the 30 miles back to town with the body in tow.
