Serenity (2005)

Serenity (2005), an American space Western film, was written and directed by Joss Whedon in his feature directorial debut. In the 26th century, humanity has colonized a new solar system with the central planets forming the Alliance. After winning a war against the rebellious Independents who refused to join them, tensions continue to simmer between the two groups. The Tam siblings, River and Dr. Simon, face their own struggles when she is taken by Alliance scientists and transformed into both a psychic and an assassin. But thanks to her brother’s bravery, River is saved as a teenager. During her training, she unknowingly uncovers government secrets, prompting the Operative – an anonymous agent of the Alliance – to hunt her down.

Seeking safety and freedom from persecution, River and Simon find sanctuary aboard Captain Malcolm ‘Mal’ Reynolds’ transport spaceship Serenity along with his loyal crew members: first mate Zoe Washburne, pilot Hoban ‘Wash’ Washburne, mercenary Jayne Cobb, and mechanic Kaylee Frye. Despite Simon’s protests, Mal insists on taking River along for a bank robbery. However, during their escape, River gives them a warning about the approaching Reavers. This incident causes Simon to make the decision to leave Serenity at the next stop. But when they arrive, a subliminal message in a TV ad causes River to attack people at a bar. In order to contain the situation, Mal brings them back on board the ship.
