Serenity (2019)
Serenity (2019) is a captivating American mystery thriller written, produced and directed by Steven Knight. Baker Dill, a fishing boat captain, leads a peaceful existence on the serene Plymouth Island. He is determined to catch a massive yellowfin tuna he has nicknamed ‘Justice’. However, his tranquil life is disrupted when his ex-wife Karen tracks him down and pleads for his help in escaping her abusive husband Frank. She offers Dill $10 million to dispose of him during an upcoming fishing trip they have booked. Struggling with conflicting feelings of responsibility towards Karen and his own moral code, Dill finds himself thrust back into a past he had left behind. The world he knows is suddenly turned upside down as he navigates through unexpected twists and turns.
It becomes clear to Dill that he is a character in a computer game designed by Patrick, modeled after his late father, John Mason. The game is based on a fond memory of Dill fishing with his dad at the age of three. As Karen, Dill’s mother, remarries, Patrick introduces her and his abusive step-father as new characters in the game and alters Dill’s mission from catching tuna to murdering his stepfather. Gradually, Dill realizes that he and the other residents of Plymouth Island are programmed entities created by Patrick. Despite this realization, he chooses to follow through with the goal of assassinating Frank.
