Série noire (1979), a French crime film directed by Alain Corneau, is based on Jim Thompson’s novel A Hell of a Woman. In the outskirts of Paris, Franck Poupart sells goods door to door on commission, living in a rundown apartment with his despondent wife. Struggling with alcohol and withdrawal symptoms, Franck seeks out a man named Tikides who owes him money. His search leads him to an old woman’s dilapidated house, where he learns that Tikides can be found at the gym. Despite being drawn to a girl he meets there, Franck manages to control his impulses and departs.
Returning home, he engages in another argument with his wife. During the altercation, he forcefully shoves her fully clothed into a bathtub filled with water, causing her to leave. Meanwhile, his boss has become aware of his dishonesty and calls the police to arrest him. The following day, a young woman bails him out by paying off his debt in full. To his surprise, he learns that it was not his wife who helped him, but Mona. Grateful for her assistance, he visits her and asks about the source of the money. She reveals that she took it from her aunt’s secret stash of cash. Intrigued by the idea of stealing the entire hoard and starting fresh with Mona, he proposes they do so together.
