Set It Off (1996)
The film Set It Off (1996), directed by F. Gary Gray, follows the story of Francesca ‘Frankie’ Sutton, a bank teller in Los Angeles. After recognizing one of the robbers from her neighborhood during a robbery, Frankie is fired and falsely accused by Detective Strode of being an accomplice. She then begins working at Luther’s Janitorial Services with her friends Lida ‘Stony’ Newsom, Cleopatra ‘Cleo’ Sims, and Tisean ‘T.T.’ Williams. Unfortunately, their boss Luther treats them poorly and pays them very little. Tired of struggling to make ends meet, Frankie suggests they carry out a bank heist themselves. While Cleo agrees, Stony and T.T. are hesitant.
After the tragic loss of Stony’s younger brother Stevie and T.T.’s son being taken away by Child Protective Services, their desire to participate in the bank robbery is heightened. During a bank scouting mission with T.T., Stony meets and begins dating Keith Weston, the bank manager. With Frankie’s knowledge of bank procedures and security measures, the four women successfully pull off several robberies. However, Detective Strode of the LAPD becomes suspicious and targets Cleo (due to her past convictions), Frankie (because she was connected to a previous robbery and subsequently fired), and Stony (after her brother’s death) as suspects. Despite Strode’s suspicions, his superiors prevent him from questioning them due to insufficient evidence.
