Seven Psychopaths (2012)
Seven Psychopaths (2012) is a film, directed and co-produced by Martin McDonagh. Marty, an alcoholic writer in Los Angeles, is struggling with his new screenplay of the same name. Although he has the title, he lacks the characters to fill it. His best friend Billy, a struggling actor, makes money by kidnapping dogs for rewards. Hans, Billy’s partner-in-crime, is devoted to his religious beliefs and caring for his wife Myra who has cancer. While Billy wants to collaborate with Marty on the screenplay, he feels too embarrassed to ask directly. In hopes of persuading Marty, Billy shows him a newspaper article about ‘The Jack of Diamonds Killer’ who leaves playing cards on his Mafia victims. Impressed by this story, Marty agrees to include the killer as one of the seven psychopaths. Additionally, Billy shares another story he had heard from a friend about ‘The Quaker’, who haunted his daughter’s murderer until he took his own life.
Unfortunately, due to Marty’s excessive drinking at the time, he believes it was his own idea – much to Billy’s frustration. In hopes of gathering unique stories, he advertises in the paper for psychopaths to share their experiences with him. One respondent, Zachariah Rigby, recounts his past as half of a serial killer duo alongside his former partner Maggie. Together, they targeted and killed other notorious serial killers: the Texarkana Moonlight Murderer, the Cleveland Torso Killer, and the Zodiac Killer. Zachariah makes a request for Marty to include his contact information in the credits, hoping to reconnect with Maggie through the film. Accepting this proposal, Marty suggests adding a fourth psychopath to the movie: a former Viet Cong fighter who assumes the disguise of a priest on a mission for revenge against soldiers involved in the Mỹ Lai massacre.
