Shadow of a Doubt (1943) is an American psychological thriller film noir directed by Alfred Hitchcock, featuring Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten. Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Newton, a restless teenage girl from Santa Rosa, California, receives exciting news: her mother’s younger brother (her namesake), Charles Oakley, will be visiting. Charlie is thrilled upon his arrival, especially when he presents her with an emerald ring as a token of their affection. However, she soon discovers that the ring has someone else’s initials engraved on it. Shortly after this discovery, two men show up at her home attempting to take her uncle’s picture. Despite their insistence that Uncle Charlie may be the ‘Merry Widow Murderer’, Charlie remains resistant to the idea until she matches the initials on the ring to one of the victims.
As she observes her uncle’s peculiar behavior, her suspicions grow even stronger. During dinner one night, Uncle Charlie reveals his hatred of rich widows as ‘fat, wheezing animals’. Horrified, young Charlie flees the room. Uncle Charlie catches up with her and takes her to a seedy bar. He confesses to being one of two murder suspects and pleads for her help. She reluctantly agrees to keep quiet, on the condition that he leaves soon to avoid devastating consequences for her mother, who adores him. Later on, news breaks of an alternative suspect being killed by an airplane propeller while fleeing police. Uncle Charlie is relieved to be cleared of suspicion, but young Charlie holds onto his dark secrets. Soon after, she suffers a dangerous fall down some deliberately sabotaged stairs.
