Shadows and Fog (1991)
Shadows and Fog (1991), an American black-and-white comedy film by Woody Allen, is based on his one-act play Death (1975). Kleinman is awakened by a vigilante mob in search of a serial killer, enlisting his help. His landlady gives him a bag of pepper. Meanwhile, circus performers Irmy and her boyfriend Paul argue about marriage and having children. When Paul leaves for another tent and has sex with fellow artist Marie, Irmy runs away to the city and ends up in a brothel. There, she catches the eye of student Jack who becomes infatuated with her. He offers her increasingly larger sums of money until she finally gives in when the price reaches $700. Kleinman and the coroner share a drink at the latter’s home, but soon after Kleinman departs, the coroner falls victim to the killer.
Later, at the police station where Kleinman is protesting a local family’s eviction, he overhears officers discussing the murder and their discovery of fingerprints on the sherry glass. While there, he encounters Irmy who was arrested for prostitution at a brothel. Irmy objects to being labeled a ‘whore’ by the officers and in all the chaos, Kleinman manages to take possession of the incriminating evidence. After paying a $50 fine, Irmy is released from custody and meets up with Kleinman outside. Together they venture out into the city, witnessing various scenes such as a man spying on a woman through her window, a destitute mother and child, and a church. Ultimately they decide to return to their starting point.
