Shallow Grave (1994)
The debut feature film directed by Danny Boyle, Shallow Grave (1994), follows chartered accountant David Stevens and his flatmates, physician Juliet Miller and journalist Alex Law in Edinburgh. In need of a new housemate, the trio conducts interviews in a cruel and calculated manner, taking pleasure in the applicants’ discomfort. They ultimately choose an enigmatic man named Hugo as their new roommate. However, shortly after moving in, the group discovers Hugo’s lifeless body from a suspected overdose along with a large sum of money in a suitcase. They make the decision to conceal his death and keep the money for themselves. To cover up their involvement, they dismember Hugo’s body and bury it in the woods without any identifiable features remaining.
Unbeknownst to them, Hugo is being tracked down by two ruthless criminals who are resorting to extreme measures like torture and murder to find him. Their downstairs neighbor’s home is burglarized, causing them to feel uneasy. While Juliet and Alex turn to retail therapy using the stolen money as a distraction, David’s worries escalate into intense paranoia. He hides the cash in the attic and starts spending most of his time up there, creating peepholes to spy on the area below. As a result, the dynamic between the trio begins to deteriorate.
