Starring Robert Downey Jr. as the iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes (2009) is a period mystery action film based on the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Set in 1890 London, the story follows Holmes and his partner Dr. John Watson as they thwart a ritualistic murder committed by Lord Henry Blackwood, a notorious killer who has already claimed five victims. Thanks to the efforts of Inspector Lestrade and the police, Blackwood is apprehended and arrested. Fast forward two months later, and Watson, who is now engaged to Mary Morstan, eagerly prepares to move out of their shared residence at 221B Baker Street, free from having to deal with Holmes’ peculiarities. However, their peaceful routine is disrupted when Blackwood, who believes he possesses supernatural abilities, requests to speak with Holmes before his execution by hanging. In a chilling warning, he reveals that three more deaths are imminent and will have catastrophic effects on the world as they know it.
After being visited by Irene Adler, a former rival, she requests his help in locating a missing man named Luke Reordan. Upon her departure, Holmes discreetly follows her as she meets with a mysterious employer, deducing that the employer is a professor who has intimidated Adler. Meanwhile, evidence suggests that Blackwood may have returned from the dead, including sightings of him and his tomb being destroyed from within. Unfortunately, Reordan’s body is discovered in Blackwood’s coffin. While examining the body for clues, Holmes and Watson uncover Reordan’s hideout and learn of his experiments to merge science and magic. A confrontation with Blackwood’s men ends in their survival when the men attempt to destroy the lab. This leads Holmes to be brought to the secretive magical fraternity known as the Temple of the Four Orders, which holds significant political power.
