Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

The film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) is a sequel to the 2009 movie. Set in 1891, Irene Adler pays Dr. Hoffmanstahl for a surgery while also receiving a letter from him. However, during the exchange, Holmes sets off a bomb disguised as a mummy case and takes the letter before Adler and Hoffmanstahl can escape. Unfortunately, Hoffmanstahl is killed by Professor Moriarty’s henchman Sebastian Moran and Moriarty poisons and kills Adler for being compromised. Back at 221B Baker Street, Holmes tells Watson about his discoveries linking seemingly unrelated events to Moriarty. After meeting with his brother Mycroft at Watson’s bachelor party, Holmes seeks help from Romani fortune-teller Madame Simza, who was the intended recipient of the letter Holmes took from Adler on behalf of her brother René.

After overcoming an assassin sent to eliminate Simza, she bids farewell. Following Watson and Mary Morstan’s wedding, Holmes encounters Moriarty for the first time. The notorious villain mockingly brings up Adler’s death and threatens to harm Watson and Mary because of Holmes’ interference. Determined to stop him, Holmes makes a vow. While on their way to Brighton for their honeymoon, Moriarty’s men ambush Watson and Mary on a train. In a daring move, Holmes pushes Mary out the train into a river where Mycroft rescues her. After defeating Moriarty’s henchmen, Holmes and Watson journey to Paris where they track down Simza. He reveals that she was in danger because René was working for Moriarty and may have shared his schemes with her. Simza then leads them to the hideout of the anarchist group that she and René used to belong to; forced by Moriarty to plant bombs.
