Shine a Light (2008), directed by Martin Scorsese, captures the Rolling Stones’ Beacon Theatre performances in 2006 during their A Bigger Bang Tour. Filmed on October 29 and November 1 of that year, the footage used for the film is solely from the second show. The music was recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Bob Clearmountain with David Hewitt operating the audio recording on the Silver Truck. Preceding the concert clips is a brief semi-fictionalized intro depicting the preparations for the shows, along with historical news clips and archival interviews featuring band members. These special shows were specifically added to the tour schedule for filming purposes and had a unique setlist compared to other dates (see below). They also boasted prestigious audience members such as former US President Bill Clinton, his wife – then United States senator – Hillary Clinton, and former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski.

The October 29 performance, benefiting the Clinton Foundation, included a short speech from founder Bill Clinton. The film also showcased performances from Jack White, Buddy Guy, and Christina Aguilera alongside the Stones. During this show, backstage in the VIP area known as the ‘Rattlesnake Inn’, 83-year-old Ahmet Ertegun suffered a fatal fall. He was quickly taken to the hospital, but passed away on December 14th, 2006. In honor of his memory, the film was dedicated to him. According to keyboardist Chuck Leavell’s tour diary, lead singer Mick Jagger had been dealing with throat issues and as a result, the scheduled Atlantic City concert was postponed and the Beacon Theatre show moved from October 31st to November 1st for Jagger’s recovery.
