Shoot Out (1971), an American Western film directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Gregory Peck, is based on Will James’s novel, The Lone Cowboy. Clay Lomax is released from prison after serving seven years for robbing a bank. He sets out to find his former crime partner, Sam Foley, who betrayed him during their escape and left him to be caught. Upon hearing of his release, Foley hires a trio of young thugs—Pepe, Skeeter, and Bobby Jay Jones—to track Lomax down. Lomax seeks information from an old friend, Trooper, a former U.S. Army cavalry soldier now confined to a wheelchair and running a saloon in town. He offers Trooper money in exchange for details about his ex-partner’s whereabouts.

The thugs eventually catch up to Lomax at Trooper’s establishment and coerce Alma, a prostitute/saloon girl working there under the caring guidance of the gruff old soldier, into spending the night with them. Lomax is rudely awakened by the commotion of his ex-girlfriend Emma and her companions in the next room. Their loudness leads to a confrontation in the hallway. Later, Lomax heads to the train station for a scheduled meeting with a former lover who has been holding onto a large sum of his money for years. To his surprise, the conductor, Mr. Frenatore, brings out not only the expected woman but also a 7-year-old girl named Decky Ortega, who had accompanied her on the trip. Sadly, the woman had passed away recently, leaving Decky orphaned.
