Short Cuts (1993)
Short Cuts (1993) is a comedy-drama directed by Robert Altman. The film follows the lives of several characters brought together by a neighborhood-wide medfly spray operation. Dr. Ralph Wyman and his wife, Marian, meet an unemployed salesman, Stuart Kane, and his wife Claire, who works as a party clown, at a concert featuring Zoe Trainer on cello. Spontaneously, they agree to have dinner together on Sunday. Meanwhile, Marian’s sister Sherri is married to Gene, a cheating cop who is having an affair with Betty Weathers. Coincidentally, Betty is in the process of divorcing one of the helicopter pilots involved in the spraying operation named Stormy. Other characters include Doreen Piggot, a waitress married to Earl – an alcoholic limo driver – and Howard Finnigan, a television commentator who resides next door to cabaret singer Tess and her daughter Zoe.
Jerry Kaiser, the pool cleaner, is married to Lois, who works from home as a phone sex operator. The couple are also close friends with Honey and her husband Bill, a makeup artist. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes when Doreen’s car accidentally hits Casey, the young son of Howard and Anne. Although initially appearing unharmed, Casey falls unconscious at home and is rushed to the hospital by his worried parents. Sadly, he remains in a coma. Meanwhile, the baker Andy Bitkower repeatedly tries to contact the Finnigans about their ordered cake. However, Howard decides to keep the phone line clear and abruptly ends Andy’s calls, causing frustration on the baker’s part. In the midst of all this chaos, Howard’s estranged father Paul shows up at the hospital and brings up a past incident between them that led to their strained relationship.
