The American Christmas computer-animated comedy television special, Shrek the Halls (2007), premiered on ABC. As the holiday season approaches, Shrek is contently residing in the swamp with his loved ones. However, upon Donkey’s prodding, Shrek reluctantly agrees to give Princess Fiona a surprise for Christmas. Seeking advice, Shrek heads to a Far Far Away bookstore where he receives a copy of Christmas For Village Idiots – a guide to celebrating the festivities. He follows its instructions by adorning his home and procuring a tree for a peaceful Christmas Eve with his family. However, Donkey disrupts their plans by bringing everyone over to the swamp. Amidst trying to read ‘A Visit from St. Nicholas’, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and Gingy interrupt with their own tales of Christmas cheer. Donkey shares about a parade that passed by and licked a giant waffle Santa before accidentally licking Shrek’s foot.
Puss had a different version of the Santa Claus tale, where he played with the tassel on Santa’s hat – or rather, a bauble. On the other hand, Gingy shared a chilling story about his girlfriend Suzy being devoured by Santa. Donkey found this absurd and stumbled upon Shrek’s Christmas for Village Idiots manual. As they fought over the book, Shrek’s dinner was ruined and he accidentally sets his rear end on fire. This causes Shrek to finally lose his cool and kick out his friends – including Donkey, who angrily refers to him as ‘Ebenezer Shrek’. With their holiday spirit crushed, Fiona is upset by Shrek’s behavior and leaves with their ogre triplets. She catches up to their friends and clarifies to Donkey what Shrek truly wanted for Christmas.
