Shutter Island (2010)
Shutter Island (2010) is a gripping neo-noir psychological thriller directed by Martin Scorsese and adapted by Laeta Kalogridis from the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehan. The film follows U.S. Marshal Edward ‘Teddy’ Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule as they are sent to investigate the disappearance of patient Rachel Solando at Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island, Boston Harbor. Despite encountering resistance from the hospital staff, particularly from psychiatrist Dr. John Cawley, Teddy is determined to uncover the truth behind Solando’s disappearance. As he delves deeper into the case, Teddy is haunted by debilitating migraines, flashbacks of his time in World War II and vivid dreams of his deceased wife Dolores, who was killed in a fire set by arsonist Andrew Laeddis. Convinced that Laeddis is on the island, Teddy confides in Chuck that this case holds personal significance for him.
However, their investigation takes an unexpected turn when Solando suddenly reappears and mistakes Teddy for her husband. Later on, Teddy ventures into Ward C, a restricted area, in search of Laeddis. There, he crosses paths with patient George Noyce, who seems to have some knowledge about Teddy. Noyce reveals that the doctors partake in unethical experiments on the patients, with some being taken to a lighthouse to undergo a lobotomy. He cautions Teddy not to trust Chuck and warns him that everyone is trying to deceive him. Together, Teddy and Chuck continue towards the lighthouse by climbing up the cliffs. However, they end up getting separated along the way. After thinking he sees Chuck’s lifeless body on the rocks below, Teddy makes his way down but instead discovers a hidden cave where a woman claiming to be Solando is hiding.
