Signs (2002)
Signs (2002), an American sci-fi horror movie, was both written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Graham Hess, a former Episcopal priest, resides on a rural farmland in Doylestown, Pennsylvania with his asthmatic son Morgan and daughter Bo. Since the tragic death of his wife Colleen in a car accident six months ago, Graham’s brother Merrill has been assisting the family. The incident caused Graham to leave the church behind. Initially, the appearance of large crop circles in their cornfield was attributed to vandals, but soon similar formations were reported globally, accompanied by hovering lights over cities. One night, while chasing a figure into the field, Graham and Merrill hear strange clicking noises coming from Bo’s old baby monitor. To their continued fear, news footage emerges of what seems to be an alien.
Following a call from Ray Reddy, the man responsible for his wife’s death, Graham heads to Reddy’s home and finds him sitting in his car outside. Reddy expresses regret for Colleen’s passing and cautions Graham about a dangerous creature confined within his pantry. Fearing that water repels the aliens, he decides to make his way to a nearby lake. Meanwhile, Graham enters the house and uses a kitchen knife to peek under the pantry door. In a moment of panic, he slices off the fingers of a clawed hand that reaches out at him. As news of the global alien invasion spreads, the family takes refuge in their home and later retreats to the basement. During the night, Morgan suffers an asthma attack but survives until morning. When they emerge, they learn from the radio that the aliens have mysteriously departed Earth as if something had frightened them off.
