Silent Fall (1994) is a gripping psychological thriller directed by Bruce Beresford. The film follows the story of Timothy ‘Tim’ Warden, an autistic child who may have witnessed his parents’ brutal murder. In an attempt to crack the case, former child psychiatrist turned therapist Jake Rainer is tasked with delving into Tim’s mind. However, Tim remains unresponsive even to Jake’s probing, adding to the suspense of the film. As Tim’s protective sister Sylvie warms up to Jake and his efforts, she becomes wary upon discovering that he was involved in the death of another child under his care. Despite this hurdle, Jake slowly gains Tim’s trust and discovers that he has a talent for mimicking voices through cutting up playing cards – a breakthrough that Sylvie enlightens him on.

With the use of a trigger phrase, Jake is able to prompt Tim’s memory and induce him to mimic the voices he heard during the fatal incident. Piecing together what happened that night, Jake suspects that Tim stumbled upon a dispute between his parents and an unknown attacker. To extract more information, Sheriff Mitch Rivers resorts to threatening Tim with drugs while Dr. Rene Harlinger successfully hypnotizes him to open up about crucial details behind a locked door. Meanwhile, Sylvie plans to whisk Tim away and persuades Jake to join them in fleeing from their current situation.
