The American horror film Silver Bullet (1985) is based on Stephen King’s 1983 novella, Cycle of the Werewolf. It follows the story of Jane Coslaw and her paraplegic younger brother Marty in their small rural town of Tarker’s Mills, Maine during the spring of 1976. A series of murders takes place, starting with railroad worker Arnie Westrum being decapitated by an unseen attacker. Pregnant Stella Randolph, driven to despair, meets a brutal end in her own bedroom. The abusive father Milt Sturmfuller is killed in his greenhouse and even Marty’s best friend Brady Kincaid falls victim to the unknown assailant. In response to these tragic events, the townspeople form a vigilante group and even Sheriff Joe Haller is swayed by Brady’s father Herb’s impassioned appeal for justice. Despite efforts by Reverend Lester Lowe to prevent further violence, tensions continue to escalate.
As the vigilantes scour the nearby woods for the killer, three of their own fall victim to a brutal attack. Later, the surviving members – with special mention to Andy Fairton – vehemently deny witnessing anything out of the ordinary. In the midst of this chaos, Reverend Lowe experiences a terrifying dream where his congregation, including those lying lifeless in caskets, transform into ferocious werewolves and turn on him. Overcome with fear, he wakes up screaming and pleads for an end to it all. Due to the escalating number of unsolved murders, a strict curfew is imposed and the town’s plans for a Fourth of July celebration are cancelled. Determined not to let this ruin their holiday, the Coslaws opt for their own backyard party and even invite Nan’s drunken brother Red to join them.
