Simon Killer (2012)
Simon Killer (2012), a film helmed by director Antonio Campos and penned by a collaboration of Campos, Brady Corbet, and Mati Diop, follows the journey of college graduate Simon. His five-year relationship with girlfriend Michelle ends when he aggressively accuses her of infidelity. Seeking solace in Paris, Simon reaches out to Michelle via email multiple times, though his private messages also contain insults. In an attempt to make her jealous, he lies about meeting someone new. Desperate to connect with someone physically, Simon visits a bar/brothel and meets prostitute Victoria. After initially paying for sex, Victoria offers him her number for future encounters. They later meet again and engage in intimate activities once more.
Meanwhile, Michelle responds to Simon’s emails with words of concern but also admits that she finds him frightening now. On the day he is set to vacate his temporary residence, he scours a nearby train station for individuals to assault and steal from him. Upon locating a group of thugs, he willingly becomes their target and uses this situation as an excuse to extend his stay at Victoria’s place. While entwined in bed, she confides in him about her ex-husband’s mistreatment, speaking in English. Simon, struggling with French fluency, misinterprets her words as ‘You have a son’. The following day, Simon muses that many of Victoria’s customers are likely married and proposes the idea of blackmailing them for financial gain.
