Six Shooter (2004)

Six Shooter (2004), a short film by Martin McDonagh, follows Donnelly as he receives the news of his wife’s passing. As the doctor breaks the devastating news that she died at 3 o’clock that morning, Donnelly is brought to her bedside. However, the doctor must quickly excuse himself due to a chaotic scene at the hospital. Two cot deaths and a woman whose son ‘shot the poor head off her’ have caused an influx of patients. Left alone with his wife, Donnelly struggles to find the right words and instead gives her a photo of their pet rabbit, David. On his train ride home, Donnelly finds himself seated across from a foul-mouthed and chain-smoking young man. Tolerating the kid’s obnoxious behavior, Donnelly engages in small talk until a couple sitting nearby becomes fed up with the young man’s abrasive manner.
After some heated exchanges, the young man leaves to get something from the buffet car. Despite offering to get something for others on his way there, when Donnelly requests some tea, all he receives is mockery from the young man. Donnelly inquires about the issue troubling the couple and discovers that their son was among the deceased infants. As Donnelly receives his tea from the child, who declines payment, he informs him of the couple’s loss. The child suggests that their son may have accidentally injured himself and expresses astonishment that more parents do not harm their children, as most kids are troublesome – including himself. Just as the couple returns, tension rises between the husband and child due to the child’s words, but Donnelly steps in to mediate.
