Skins (2002)
Skins (2002) is an American feature film directed by Chris Eyre and adapted from Adrian C. Louis’ novel of the same name. Set on the Beaver Creek Indian Reservation in South Dakota, the story revolves around two Lakota Sioux brothers, Rudy and Mogie Yellow Lodge. While Rudy works as a police officer, Mogie is unemployed and has a teenage son. As Rudy attempts to balance his job responsibilities with caring for his brother and nephew, he becomes increasingly frustrated with Mogie’s attitude towards life on the reservation. In their youth, Mogie had often told Rudy stories about Iktomi, the trickster spider, which resurfaces in Rudy’s life early on in the film. Despite his best efforts to help his brother and community through lawful means, Rudy begins to take matters into his own hands after discovering a young man’s dead body while responding to a call at an abandoned house. In the dark night, he catches sight of a figure fleeing from him but loses them when he trips and falls onto a rock while pursuing them.
Rudy’s friend informs him that rocks hold great spiritual significance, causing Rudy to become concerned about a possible change in his behavior. He spots a teenager wearing the same shoes as the person who fled from the murder scene and tails him. Through eavesdropping, Rudy learns that the boys are discussing getting rid of a pair of boots that links them to the crime. With black paint on his face for disguise, he creeps up on them wielding a baseball bat and savagely assaults their kneecaps, introducing himself as the ghost of their victim. After washing away the paint, he is visited by Iktomi once again. Enraged by a news report revealing a liquor store taking advantage of Native American alcoholics in a nearby town, Rudy takes action – once more with painted face – and sets fire to the store.
