The science fiction action-adventure film, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), marked Kerry Conran’s directorial debut. Set in a technologically advanced 1939, the zeppelin Hindenburg III docks atop the Empire State Building. On board is Dr. Jorge Vargas, who arranges for a package containing two vials to be delivered to another scientist, Dr. Walter Jennings. However, after delivering the package, Dr. Vargas disappears. Meanwhile, reporter Polly Perkins from The Chronicle is investigating the disappearances of not only Dr. Vargas but also five other renowned scientists. A mysterious message leads her to Radio City Music Hall, where she defies her editor Mr. Paley’s warnings and meets with Dr. Jennings during a showing of The Wizard of Oz.
He reveals that he believes a certain “Dr. Totenkopf” is responsible and will target him next. Suddenly, giant robots attack the city and authorities call on ‘Sky Captain’ Joe Sullivan – the hero of the city and leader of the private air force known as the Flying Legion – for help once again. As it turns out, Sullivan is also Perkins’ former lover. As Joe battles the robots in his modified Curtiss P-40 fighter, Perkins fearlessly snaps photographs from the street. He successfully disables one robot, causing the others to retreat. Reports of similar attacks surface worldwide. The damaged robot is brought to the Legion’s air base for examination by technology specialist Dex. Polly tags along and convinces Joe to allow her to join the investigation.
