Skyscraper (2018)
Skyscraper (2018) is an American action thriller movie from 2018, written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. The film follows the journey of Will Sawyer, a former Marine turned FBI Hostage Rescue Team commander. While on a mission with colleague Ben Gillespie, Sawyer suffers the loss of his left leg below the knee during an encounter with a suicidal hostage taker. Ten years later, Sawyer is now a private security consultant and is recommended by Gillespie to assess the security measures for Hong Kong’s tallest skyscraper, ‘The Pearl’. With its impressive height of 3,500 feet (1,060 meters) and 225 floors, this residential tower is owned by Zhao Long Ji. Sawyer’s wife Sarah and their twin children Henry and Georgia join him as they stay on the not-yet-opened residential floors. During his meeting with Zhao, Gillespie, security director Okeke, and head insurance underwriter Pierce; Sawyer confirms that the computerized fire and security systems have passed his rigorous tests. However, he still needs to inspect the offsite security center before giving his final report.
Zhao provides Sawyer with a tablet that grants him full control over the Pearl’s systems. Together, they head to the offsite facility, where a hired thief, working for notorious international terrorist Kores Botha, attempts to steal the device. It is then revealed that Gillespie is also working for Botha and he launches an attack on Sawyer in an attempt to retrieve the tablet. The altercation ends tragically with Gillespie’s demise. Meanwhile, Botha and his men successfully gain entry into the Pearl and use a water-reactive chemical to ignite a fire on the 96th floor. This causes a barrier that blocks access to the upper 130 floors. Sawyer attempts to return to the Pearl but is thwarted by Xia, one of Botha’s associates who takes possession of the tablet and eliminates all individuals present at the offsite facility.
