Sleeper (1973)
Sleeper (1973), directed and starring Woody Allen, is an American science fiction comedy film. Miles Monroe, a jazz musician and owner of the ‘Happy Carrot’ health-food store in New York City’s Greenwich Village, undergoes a routine operation at a hospital in 1973 which unfortunately goes awry. This leads to his cryopreservation for 200 years. In 2173, two scientists illegally revive him as they are part of an underground rebellion. This group is at odds with the police state that the United States has become due to the destruction caused by ‘a man named Albert Shanker obtaining a nuclear warhead’. The country is ruled by an unnamed dictator referred to as ‘The Leader’ and is on the brink of implementing a mysterious plan known as the ‘Aries Project’. The rebels intend to use Miles as their spy to thwart this plan, as he is the only member of this dystopian society without a biometric identity on file.
The authorities become suspicious and quickly arrive to interrogate the scientists, who are then apprehended and subjected to having their brains ‘electronically simplified’. Miles manages to escape by disguising himself as a robot, which is eventually delivered at random to the luxurious home of socialite Luna Schlosser. As Luna decides to alter her new butler’s unattractive head for something more aesthetically pleasing, Miles reveals his true identity. Fearing the consequences of his disclosure and showing little sympathy towards the rebels, she threatens to report him to the authorities. Not wanting to be caught, Miles takes matters into his own hands by kidnapping Luna and fleeing in search of the Aries Project.
