Sleeping with the Enemy (1991)
Sleeping with the Enemy (1991), an American psychological thriller directed by Joseph Ruben, follows the story of Laura Burney. Her life seems perfect with her successful investment counselor husband, Martin in Boston. However, Martin’s charming facade hides an obsessive and controlling personality that has subjected Laura to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse throughout their nearly four-year marriage. Despite his apologetic ways of showering her with flowers and gifts after each instance, the pattern continues. One day, Martin accepts an invitation from their neighbor, a doctor, for an evening sail despite knowing about Laura’s fear of water and inability to swim. Unfortunately, a severe storm surprises them on the voyage and both men struggle to control the boat. In the chaos, Laura is swept overboard and despite an extensive Coast Guard search, she is presumed dead from drowning.
The news devastates Martin as he is inconsolable over the loss of his wife. Laura was actually still alive. She had been secretly learning to swim and devised a plan to fake her death in order to escape from Martin’s abusive and obsessive behavior. During a storm, she jumped overboard, swam ashore, and returned home. After cutting her hair and putting on a wig, she took her stashed belongings and money and headed to a nearby bus station. From there, Laura relocated to Cedar Falls, Iowa under the new identity of “Sara Waters.” She had previously told Martin that her blind and stroke-impaired mother, Chloe, had passed away, but in reality, she had moved her mother to a nursing home in Iowa. Laura rented a house and found a job, settling into her new life as Sara. Her neighbor Ben Woodward, a young drama teacher at a local college, was drawn to her but also suspected she may have had a difficult past.
