Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
Sleepless in Seattle (1993) is a beloved romantic comedy helmed by director Nora Ephron. The film follows Sam Baldwin, a grieving widower and successful architect from Chicago who decides to start fresh in Seattle with his young son Jonah. A year later, on the eve of Christmas, Jonah dials into a popular radio talk show and convinces his hesitant father to open up about his late wife Maggie and their love story, particularly how he knew she was ‘the one’ when he first held her hand. This heartfelt broadcast draws the attention of thousands of women across the nation who are deeply moved by Sam’s words and begin writing to him. Among them is Annie Reed, a reporter for the Baltimore Sun who is engaged to Walter but senses that something is lacking in their relationship. Inspired by the classic romance film An Affair to Remember, Annie crafts a letter to Sam proposing they meet at the top of the Empire State Building on Valentine’s Day.
After considering her options, she decides against mailing it. However, her friend and editor, Becky, ends up sending it instead. Later on, Becky agrees to send Annie on a story assignment to Seattle once some background research has been done on Sam through a detective agency. Meanwhile, Sam starts dating a coworker named Victoria, who happens to be disliked by Jonah. When Jonah comes across Annie’s letter, he gets a gut feeling that she could be the perfect match for Sam. Unfortunately, he is unable to convince Sam to meet Annie in New York on Valentine’s Day. That is until Jessica – Jonah’s friend whose mother works as a travel agent – encourages him to respond to Annie and agree to the New York meeting. Coincidentally, while dropping Victoria off at the airport, Sam catches sight of Annie stepping off her plane and is instantly captivated by her presence, although unaware of her identity.
