Sleepwalkers (1992) is a horror film from the US, written by Stephen King and directed by Mick Garris. The protagonists, Charles Brady and his mother/lover Mary, are sleepwalkers. These shapeshifting energy vampires have the ability to change form into human-sized bipedal werecats at will. They typically take on a human appearance and possess telekinetic and illusion powers. However, their one weakness is domestic cats, which can see through their illusions and attack them with deadly results. Charles and Mary are nomads who have recently settled in Travis, Indiana after leaving Bodega Bay, California where they drained and killed a young girl. Charles attends the local high school where he meets Tanya Robertson in his creative writing class.
In his desire to sustain both himself and his ailing mother, Charles pretends to have feelings for Tanya and plans to take her life essence. Mr. Fallows, their teacher, is doubtful of Charles’ intentions and confronts him about his falsified high school certificates. A physical altercation ensues between them, during which Charles fatally injures Mr. Fallows. During their initial outing at a cemetery picnic, Charles tries to leech off Tanya’s life force while kissing her. Deputy Sheriff Andy Simpson happens to drive by and Tanya turns to him for assistance. In response, Charles takes the life of Deputy Simpson as well. As he resumes draining Tanya’s life force, the deputy’s cat, Clovis, in a fit of fury over its owner’s death, viciously scratches Charles on the face and chest.
