Sleepwalking (2008)
The American drama film, Sleepwalking (2008), follows the struggles of Tara Reedy and her mother Joleen, who have been forced to leave their previous home due to Joleen’s boyfriend’s arrest for growing marijuana. With nowhere else to turn, Joleen persuades her younger brother James to take them in. However, after settling into James’ apartment, Joleen disappears with a truck driver, leaving Tara in the care of her uncle who works on a road-building crew. Unfortunately, he loses his job and is forced to stay with his married best friend Randall. Meanwhile, Tara is placed in a foster home where she faces bullying and desperately yearns to be reunited with her family. James visits her and she confides in him about her struggles at the foster home, asking him to take her away.
James brings Tara to his childhood home, the place he and Joleen had escaped from years ago. They agree to pretend to be father and daughter during the journey and start to form a close bond. As they reach the Reedy farm, which has since turned into a dilapidated ranch for livestock, they are immediately put to work by Mr. Reedy, the head of the household. He treats Tara with disdain and physically assaults her for not being skilled in farming. James tries to defend her but is met with threats from his father, who wields a shovel. Despite James’ attempts, Mr. Reedy continues to harm Tara until James cannot take it any longer and retaliates by attacking his father with the shovel, seeking retribution for their past years of mistreatment by him and Joleen.
