Tim Burton’s gothic supernatural horror film, Sleepy Hollow (1999), is a loose adaptation of Washington Irving’s short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Set in 1799, the film follows New York City police constable Ichabod Crane as he investigates a string of brutal murders in the upstate Dutch hamlet. Among the insular town elders who receive him are wealthy Baltus Van Tassel, town doctor Thomas Lancaster, Reverend Steenwyck, notary James Hardenbrook, and magistrate Samuel Philipse. According to local beliefs, the killer is an undead headless Hessian mercenary from the American Revolutionary War who rides a black steed in search of his missing head. Despite skepticism towards the paranormal tale, Ichabod begins his investigation and boards with Baltus and his wife Mary. During his stay, he becomes enamored with Baltus’s spiritual daughter Katrina.
After a fourth victim is killed, Ichabod takes Young Masbath, the victim’s son, under his wing. Together, they follow a tip from Philipse and uncover the disturbing truth that the widow was pregnant when she died. Tragically, Ichabod witnesses Philipse’s death at the hands of the Horseman shortly after. To stop this evil force, he, Young Masbath, and Katrina venture into the Western Woods. There, they meet an old crone who reveals the location of the Horseman’s grave – known as ‘Tree of the Dead’. Without hesitation, Ichabod digs up the grave only to find that someone has already taken the skull. He deduces that an evil entity must have stolen it in order to control and use the Horseman to terrorize and kill innocent villagers.
