Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
Slumdog Millionaire (2008), a British drama film, is a loose adaptation of the novel Q & A (2005) by Indian author Vikas Swarup. The story follows 18-year-old Jamal Malik, an Indian Muslim from the Juhu slum of Mumbai, who participates in the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati. Before reaching the final question worth ₹20 million, Jamal is wrongfully accused of cheating by the police and subjected to torture. As he gives his answers, we see flashbacks of key moments in his life that have helped him gain knowledge. For instance, when he was five years old, Jamal jumped into a cesspit just to get Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan’s autograph. Unfortunately, his brother Salim later sells it off. In another significant event, their mother is killed during the riots in Bombay and while trying to escape it, they come across a child dressed as Rama holding a bow and arrow in their right hand.
They also meet Latika during this time and Jamal suggests taking her in as their ‘third musketeer’, making reference to Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers which they had learned about in school. The two brothers, Athos and Porthos, call themselves by these names but are unaware of the third musketeer’s identity. They are taken under the wing of Maman, a gangster who trains young runaways to become beggars. However, they soon learn that Maman is cruelly blinding the children for better profit. In a brave attempt to escape with Latika, Salim and Jamal manage to hop onto a moving train. Unfortunately, Latika falls behind and Salim intentionally lets go of her hand, leaving her at the mercy of Maman once again.
