Small Time Crooks (2000)
Small Time Crooks (2000), an American crime-comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen, follows the story of career criminal Ray and his cohorts as they hatch a plan to lease a defunct pizzeria. Their goal? To dig a tunnel from the basement of the restaurant to a nearby bank. In order to cover their tracks, Ray’s wife Frenchy cleverly disguises their activities, selling cookies out of the front of the establishment. However, their robbery scheme proves to be unsuccessful, while their cookie business becomes wildly popular. As they expand their enterprise through franchising, the once down-and-out duo become wealthy millionaires. Despite their success, Frenchy overhears party guests mocking their lack of sophistication and poor decorating choices. Determined to fit in with high society, she enlists the help of an art dealer named David to teach them proper etiquette and culture.
While Frenchy quickly takes to her new refined lifestyle, Ray begrudgingly goes along for the ride, despising every moment of it. Frenchy is unaware that David is simply taking advantage of her to fund his artistic endeavors. After reaching his breaking point, Ray decides to leave Frenchy. While in Europe, David and Frenchy receive a distressing call revealing that she has been deceived by her accountants and has lost all of her assets, including her cookie business, home, and belongings. Without hesitation, David abandons her. At the same time, Ray reverts back to his dishonest ways and attempts to steal an expensive necklace at a party. His plan goes awry when he mistakes the real necklace for a duplicate he had made.
