Smart People (2008), a American comedy-drama film, tells the story of Lawrence Wetherhold, an English professor at Carnegie Mellon University. As a single parent to his college-aged son James and high school daughter Vanessa, as well as the sibling of his adopted brother Chuck, Lawrence’s life is complicated. He often clashes with Chuck, who he sees as a ne’er-do-well, and is generally bitter, arrogant, and self-absorbed. These traits also affect his relationship with his students; he has little interest in teaching them and even parks illegally on campus. However, when his car gets impounded and he can’t retrieve it due to a former student working as a security guard, Lawrence’s life takes a turn for the unexpected. While attempting to retrieve his briefcase from the impounded car, he falls off a fence and suffers from a seizure. Luckily, Dr. Janet Hartigan treats him in the emergency room. Due to his condition, Lawrence cannot drive and relies on others for transportation.

This leads Vanessa to come up with what she deems as a ‘win/win’ solution – having Chuck serve as Lawrence’s live-in driver since he is currently homeless and jobless. During their follow-up appointment, Lawrence discovers that Janet had once been one of his students. She spots him waiting outside the hospital in the cold, since Chuck had failed to meet him, and kindly offers to give him a ride home. As they reach their destination, Lawrence suggests meeting for coffee later on and Janet eagerly agrees, fulfilling her old crush on her professor. Vanessa confronts Janet about Lawrence’s emotional fragility. At dinner, Lawrence dominates the conversation and Janet eventually walks out. To have another ‘face to face conversation’, Lawrence pays a visit to Janet in the emergency room and she agrees. After their date without wine, they go back to Janet’s place where they finally act upon their mutual attraction.
