The action thriller film Snitch (2013), directed by Ric Roman Waugh and starring Dwayne Johnson, is based on the real-life experiences of DEA informant James Settembrino. College student Jason Collins gets pulled into a dangerous situation by his friend Craig, who convinces him to receive a package of drugs at his house. However, the package also contains a tracking device. When DEA officers raid the house, Jason attempts to escape but is caught and arrested by Agent Cooper. Later on, while attending a barbecue with his estranged father John Matthews (who owns a construction company), John receives a call from his ex-wife Sylvie informing him about Jason’s arrest. The ex-spouses meet with an investigator who reveals that Craig set up Jason in order to lessen his own punishment. With a minimum prison sentence of 10 years hanging over him, Jason feels pressured to become an informant against one of his own friends in order to reduce his sentence.

Through his connections, John sets up a meeting with local United States Attorney Joanne Keeghan. As part of her aggressive anti-drug campaign, Keeghan is willing to reduce Jason’s sentence if John provides information on a drug dealer. To monitor any interactions and gather evidence for an arrest, Cooper and his task force are involved. After scouring his employee records, John discovers that new hire Daniel James has two previous distribution convictions. Despite leading a clean life to avoid a third strike, Daniel agrees to introduce John to a dealer for $20,000. Unbeknownst to Daniel, John is working as an informant. The introduction leads to Malik, a high-ranking and dangerous local drug dealer who also has two strikes on his record.
