Snowden (2016)
Oliver Stone’s biographical thriller Snowden (2016) follows the story of Edward Snowden, who in 2013 arranged a secret meeting in Hong Kong with documentarian Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald. During the meeting, they discussed releasing classified information regarding illegal mass surveillance conducted by the NSA. This meeting was later documented in Poitras’ film Citizenfour, which was also featured in the movie Snowden. Prior to this, in 2004, Snowden joined the U.S. Army with plans to join the Special Forces but was discharged due to a fractured tibia. He then applied for a position at the CIA and underwent screening, initially giving insufficient answers. However, Deputy Director Corbin O’Brian took a chance on him given the extraordinary circumstances at hand.
After arriving at ‘The Hill’, Snowden receives instruction and undergoes evaluations in cyberwarfare. He gains knowledge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which evades the Fourth Amendment protections of U.S. citizens by appointing a panel of judges chosen by the Chief Justice to approve warrant requests. Each member of Snowden’s group is assigned the task of creating and then dismantling a hidden communication network in their hometown within an eight-hour time frame, with an average completion time of five hours. O’Brian is impressed when Snowden finishes the task in just 38 minutes. Meanwhile, through a dating website, Snowden meets Lindsay Mills, with whom he forges a connection despite their opposing political beliefs. In 2007, Snowden begins his first overseas posting with diplomatic cover in Geneva and brings Mills along with him.
