Solaris (2002) is an American science fiction drama film written and directed by Steven Soderbergh and produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau. Clinical psychologist Dr. Chris Kelvin receives a message from his scientist friend Dr. Gibarian, through emissaries for DBA, the corporation running a space station orbiting the planet Solaris. Gibarian asks for Kelvin’s help in understanding an unusual phenomenon, but refuses to disclose further information. DBA is faced with uncertainty about what steps to take next, as their mission to study Solaris has gone off track and the astronauts on board are reluctant to return home. Additionally, contact has been lost with the security team sent to the station. In a final attempt to bring the crew back safely, Kelvin agrees to embark on a solo mission to Solaris.
Upon arriving at Solaris Station onboard the Athena, Kelvin is met with devastating news. Gibarian has taken his own life and most of the crew have either perished or vanished. Remaining crew members Snow and Dr. Gordon are hesitant to disclose the details surrounding the situation. However, things take a strange turn when Kelvin catches sight of a young boy dashing through the station. Later, while alone in his quarters, Kelvin’s thoughts are consumed by memories of his beloved wife Rheya – from their first encounter to their most intimate moments together. In a state of shock and terror, he wakes up to discover Rheya apparently alive again beside him in bed. Not knowing what to do, Kelvin impulsively leads ‘Rheya’ onto an escape pod and sends it into space. After admitting his actions to Snow, he learns that these replicas of loved ones have been appearing without explanation (including the little boy who resembles Gibarian’s son).
