Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) is an American space Western film that revolves around Han Solo, a character from the Star Wars franchise. It is part of the Star Wars anthology series and is preceded by Rogue One (2016). The story begins on the planet Corellia, where orphans Han and Qi’ra escape a local gang. In order to secure their passage on a transport, they bribe an Imperial officer with stolen coaxium, a type of starship fuel. Unfortunately, Qi’ra is captured before she can board. Determined to rescue her, Han joins the Imperial Navy as a flight cadet and adopts the surname ‘Solo’. After being expelled from the Imperial Flight Academy for insubordination, Han ends up serving as an infantryman on Mimban. It is there that he meets Tobias Beckett, who leads a trio of criminals pretending to be Imperial soldiers. Attempting to blackmail Beckett into letting him join their gang, Han’s plan backfires and he ends up getting arrested. He is then thrown into a pit where he meets Chewbacca, a Wookiee prisoner. Beckett, realizing the strength of a Wookiee could be useful, recruits one to help with his plan to steal a shipment of coaxium on Vandor-1. However, the Cloud Riders, led by Enfys Nest, show up and thwart their efforts. In the chaos that ensues, Beckett’s partner Val and crew member Rio are killed, prompting Beckett to confess that he was instructed to steal the shipment by Dryden Vos, a powerful figure in the Crimson Dawn syndicate. To repay his debt and save his life from Vos’ wrath, Han and Chewbacca agree to help him steal another shipment. Their journey takes them to Vos’ luxurious yacht where Han reunites with Qi’ra, now Vos’ top lieutenant. In order for their risky plan to work, they need unrefined coaxium from the mines on Kessel. While Vos agrees, he insists that Qi’ra joins them on the mission. She leads them to Lando Calrissian – a renowned smuggler and pilot – in hopes of securing his ship, the Millennium Falcon.
