Solomon Kane (2009)
Based on the character originally created by Robert E. Howard in 1928, the action-adventure film Solomon Kane (2009) follows the story of English privateer Solomon Kane. In 1600, Kane leads his crew into battle against Ottoman defenders in North Africa, eventually raiding a fortress where they encounter demons. Despite defeating the demons and reaching the throne room, Kane is stopped by a demon known as the ‘Devil’s Reaper’ who reveals that his soul belongs to Satan due to past sins. Refusing to accept this fate, Kane escapes by jumping out of a window. A year later, he seeks redemption by renouncing violence and donating his wealth to the Church while finding sanctuary in a monastery. However, after a prophetic dream and being expelled by the abbot, Kane is ambushed by robbers who mock his vow of pacifism and leave him for dead.
He is rescued and treated by the Crowthorns, a Puritan family traveling west to the New World. A witch marks Meredith Crowthorn, and shortly after, she is taken by followers of sorcerer Malachi. In the midst of the chaos, her father and brothers are killed. Determined to rescue her, Kane renounces his vows and sets off on a journey filled with battles against Malachi’s minions. Along the way, he comes across a crazed priest who reveals the true intentions of these followers – to turn the strong into soldiers and enslave the weak. The priest tries to sacrifice Kane to his ghoul-like parishioners, but Kane manages to escape. However, he soon faces a group of robbers who had previously attacked him and have now become corrupted by Malachi’s influence.
