Someone to Watch Over Me (1987)
Ridley Scott’s Someone to Watch Over Me (1987) is an American neo-noir romantic thriller that follows socialite Claire Gregory as she attends a party and art show hosted by her long-time friend, Winn Hockings. Her boyfriend, Neil Steinhart, joins her for the evening. Meanwhile, newly appointed NYPD detective Mike Keegan is at a separate party in another part of town. Tensions arise when Winn is confronted by his former partner, Joey Venza, who is upset that Winn didn’t come to him for money to fund his new art studio. The altercation takes a deadly turn when Venza stabs Winn in front of Claire. As she screams in shock and fear, Venza spots her and gives chase. However, she narrowly escapes into an elevator just in time.
The authorities are summoned and detective Keegan is present. As a married man, he immediately becomes enamored with Claire. Together with his colleagues, he is tasked with safeguarding her until she can positively identify Venza (once he has been apprehended) and testify in court. Keegan is unwavering in his determination to keep Claire safe and goes to great lengths to do so. Venza makes multiple threats and nearly succeeds in taking her life at one point. As a result of his involvement in the case, Keegan’s marriage to Ellie falls apart. Despite their love for each other, Keegan cannot bring himself to abandon his family.
