Based on the 1974 short story by Stephen King, Sometimes They Come Back (1991) is a made-for-television horror film about Jim Norman’s return to his old hometown of Liberty, Missouri. Along with his wife Sally and son Scott, Jim moves back to accept a teaching job. As a child, Jim witnessed his brother Wayne’s murder by a group of greasers during a train tunnel mugging in 1963. His family then moved away from the small town, but now they are returning. However, old wounds resurface as Jim begins to have nightmares about his brother’s death. To his horror, he soon realizes that the ghosts of Wayne’s killers – Richard, Vinnie, and David – have returned from the dead as students in his class.
The police are suspicious of Jim’s proximity to the dead students. The revived killers challenge him to a confrontation and make an attempt on his son’s life with their car on the 27th anniversary of Wayne’s murder. Jim discovers that Wayne’s spirit is stuck in limbo until his murder is resolved. At the Cemetery, he finds the graves of the greasers who demand revenge from the survivor, Carl. It turns out that when Jim was a child, he had taken the murderers’ car keys, ultimately leading to their deaths. He returns to his abandoned childhood home and locates the old car keys from the night of his brother’s murder.
