Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) is an action adventure comedy film based on Sega’s popular video game series. The film follows the story of Sonic, a young blue hedgehog with supersonic speed, who is unexpectedly ambushed by an echidna tribe on his home planet. His guardian, a wise owl named Longclaw, gives him a special bag of rings that can create portals to other places. She uses one to send Sonic to Earth while she stays behind to protect their home. Ten years later, Sonic lives in secrecy in a cavern beneath the rural town of Green Hills, Montana. Despite his hidden life, he longs for friendship and looks up to Sheriff Tom Wachowski and his wife Maddie. Little does he know that the couple is planning to move to San Francisco as Tom has accepted a job at the SFPD.
One night, Sonic becomes overwhelmed with loneliness while playing baseball by himself. In the midst of his distress, he inadvertently sets off an electromagnetic pulse during one of his speedy runs. The result is a widespread power outage across the Pacific Northwest. In response, the U.S. Department of Defense turns to the expertise of unconventional roboticist and scientific prodigy Dr. Robotnik to investigate the cause of the outage. Feeling exposed, Sonic quickly makes plans to flee to a planet filled with only mushrooms and fungi. As he prepares to depart, he is unexpectedly tranquilized by Tom who stumbled upon him in his shed. In a daze, Sonic catches sight of Tom’s shirt and accidentally opens a portal to San Francisco in his confused state before passing out and dropping his bag of rings onto the roof of the Transamerica Pyramid.
