Souls at Sea (1937)
Souls at Sea (1937) is an American historical adventure film directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Gary Cooper and George Raft. Based on a story by Ted Lesser, the film follows the journey of a first mate on a slave ship who leads a mutiny to overthrow the captain and free the enslaved passengers. Abolitionist Michael ‘Nuggin’ Taylor takes on an undercover mission to disrupt illegal slave trading, despite both the United States and Great Britain having laws against it. However, things become complicated when Royal Navy Lieutenant Stanley Tarryton, who is actually working for the slave traders, becomes entangled in conflict with Taylor. Adding to the tension is Tarryton’s sister Margaret, who falls for Taylor during their tumultuous encounter.
The Taylor-Tarryton conflict becomes intertwined with the loss of the ship William Brown. It is determined that a little girl accidentally caused the fire on board, forcing the passengers to abandon ship. As luck would have it, Taylor happens to be a passenger on this ill-fated voyage. When the captain is injured, Taylor takes on the responsibility of leading the evacuation. However, there is only one lifeboat available, which cannot fit all of the survivors. Despite some being close by in the ocean, Taylor prevents them from overloading and damaging the lifeboat by resorting to shooting some with his pistol. As a result of his actions, he faces charges for murder and is ultimately found guilty.
