Southland (2009 — 2013)
Southland (2009–2013), a crime drama TV series, was created by writer Ann Biderman and produced by Warner Bros. Television. It initially aired on NBC in 2009 for one season before being picked up by TNT for four more seasons from 2010 to 2013. The first season on NBC ran for seven episodes, airing from April 9 to May 21. Shortly after the finale, it was announced that Southland would return for a second season with an initial order of 13 episodes starting September 25. However, its premiere was pushed back to October 23 due to the need for more promotion. Unfortunately, two weeks before the scheduled premiere, NBC announced that the show had been canceled after just one season. In November 2009, TNT acquired the rights to the original seven episodes of Southland, as well as six completed episodes from its second season. The show began airing its second season on March 2, 2010. In April 2010, TNT revealed that it had also picked up Southland for a ten-episode third season, set to premiere on January 4, 2011. However, this revival came with a considerable budget cut and cast reduction. A ten-episode fourth season was then announced in March 2011 and premiered on January 17, 2012. The show was later renewed for a fifth season of ten episodes which started airing on February 13, 2013. Unfortunately, in May of that year, TNT made the announcement that Southland had been canceled after five seasons.
Southland provides an unfiltered glimpse into Los Angeles and the LAPD officers who uphold its law. Its first season delves into the daily encounters and relationships of patrol officers and detectives, focusing more on their personal journeys than on traditional police procedures. This diverse cast includes Officer Ben Sherman, fresh on the job, and his mentor John Cooper, a closeted cop; Detective Lydia Adams, balancing her job with caring for her mother; Officer Chickie Brown, determined to break barriers by joining the esteemed SWAT team; and Detective Sammy Bryant, struggling to balance family life with work obligations.
