Written and directed by Richard Kelly, Southland Tales (2006) is a dystopian black comedy thriller film. In an alternate reality of the United States on July 4, 2005, twin nuclear attacks destroyed two Texas towns (El Paso and Abilene) causing mass destruction and loss of life. This triggered a catastrophic chain of events that threw the country into chaos and panic, leading to a Third World War (based on the effects of the War on Terror). As a result, the draft was reinstated by the government, while US-IDent, a new agency with extended powers under the PATRIOT Act, constantly monitors citizens’ activities including censorship of the internet and mandatory fingerprinting for computer and bank account access.
Amidst ongoing global conflict and a crippling shortage of fuel, German company Treer has developed a revolutionary solution – the ‘Fluid Karma’ generator. Powered by perpetual ocean currents, this technology promises an endless source of energy. However, its creator Baron von Westphalen and his team have concealed the fact that the generators disrupt Earth’s rotation and cause damage to space-time through their transmission via quantum entanglement. Fast forward to 2008 in what locals refer to as ‘The Southland’, and Los Angeles is on the brink of chaos, haunted by an underground neo-Marxist movement.
